The manual and API reference document everything already.
A read over of Transport.py will tell you the rest of the nuances
This is also littered with mistakes too, and weird text encoding errors. I will cover the
mistakes in the next post.

Hmm, I personally, do no think that the manual and API reference doc is everything that
is ever needed and would definately welcome a formal spec. However, I see that this is
quote a big task and needs constant updating as well, since reticulum is still moving
rapidly at this point.

This is how it always has been, is now, and always will be.
You do not get a better spec, than one that is executable, testable and actually deployed
and operating 24/7 on tens of thousands of devices.

Hey Mark,
I do get the sentiment, and I've read your stance on this before, but for me that is
....well, just not a (formal) spec. It surely is a reference implementation of a spec you
have in your head, though.
And while I like code (a lot), I would welcome a clear separation of actual
protocol/intended behavior, implementation details and code noise.
Right now, everyone needs to work through the rns code to get an understanding of the
actual inner workings that go beyond the manual/API doc. Especially everyone that wants
to port Reticulum to a different language, which I think, should be welcomed, since that
means more widespread use.
However, having read a different thread where the outcome was "we need to erect (even
more) barriers to entry" for Reticulum, I'm not so sure, if this even desired?
Lastly, don't get me wrong please. I am not saying you should write a formal protocol
spec. But maybe we will have something like that, community driven, at some point?
(Granted it will always lag behind...) Or would you even object to that?

A spec is not code. Those are two very different kinds of documents, written and
structured quite differently. Usually for overlapping, but not identical audiences.
The best spec is the complete and precise one[1]. The best implementation is, well, the
correct implementation of that spec.
But hey, YMMV ;-)

The problem with the code being the spec is that it's very difficult to tell if certain
functionality is required for all reticulum to obey for the or if it's something variable
like the exact algorithm used for pathing or scheduling for how announcements are sent.
And arguably this is what the manual does, and it's pretty good for high level detail,
but for stuff like for example, the exact layout of a backbone interface announcement,
which has to be agreed upon by all implementations, that's not explicitly stated there
either.
